The vampire thriller Sinners has broken the record for the number of Oscar nominations. Its director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B Jordan were among its 16 nominations – 2 more than the previous record of Titanic, La La Land and All About Eve.
Even discounting its nomination in the new casting category, it would still have been an Academy Awards record breaker.
The second biggest number of nominations went to the revolutionary revenge drama – or comedy, as it was known at the Golden Globes – One Battle After Another, with 13, although with 2 of those – for Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro in the supporting actor category, the most they could hope for would be 12 wins and Pen and del Toro could end up splitting the vote and letting through Sinners’ Delroy Lindo, the Golden Globe winner Stellan Skarsgård
or Jacob Elordi, the highest profile of Frankenstein‘s 9 nominations.
One Battle’s star Leonardo diCaprio will have a chance to avenge his defeat to Marty Supreme’s Timothée Chalamet at the Globes, but coming hot off the heels of last year’s A Complete Unknown nomination, Chalamet is being seen as the favourite, even up against Michael B Jordan and outsider Ethan Hawke, achieving his first leading actor Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Great American Songbook composer Lorenz Hart in Blue Moon. The other nominee is the Golden Globe drama winner, Wagner Moura.
Hamnet‘s Paul Mescal failed to make the cut, unlike his co-star Jessie Buckley, who’ll be hoping to repeat her Golden Globes success, although this time she’ll be up against fellow Globes winner Rose Byrne, who took the comedy prize, earlier this month, for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.

The 5 Oscar nominees for Best Actress were all among the 12 drama and comedy nominees at the Golden Globes, so 7 of them had to miss out. Buckley and Byrne are joined by Emma Stone, Kate Hudson and Renate Reinsve, but One Battle newcomer Chase Infiniti missed out.
Her co-star Teyana Taylor, who won at the Globes, is in the running again at the Academy Awards, alongside 3 of her Globes challengers. Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas are in the running again – both for Sentimental Value, as is Amy Madigan for Weapons – another rare nominations for a horror performance. But there was nothing for The Smashing Machine’s Emily Blunt this time and Ariana Grande failed to repeat her Globes recognition for Wicked: For Good, which missed out on any nominations. The final woman on the acting shortlist was the British-Nigerian Wunmi Mosaku, for Sinners.
Best Director is likely to be a 3-way fight between One Battle’s Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler for Sinners and Chloé Zhao for Hamnet. Rounding out the category are Joachim Trier, for Sentimental Value and Marty Supreme’s Josh Safdie, who’s had considerably more lucky than his brother Benny, whose much-touted The Smashing Machine’s only recognition from the Academy was in the hair and make-up category.

And what was once a shortlist of 5 for the top award of the night, Best Picture, remains 10 strong this year. This was originally to help the Academy ensure more public interest in its awards show, by including some of the top box-office performers of the year, but the only populist nominee is Brad Pitt’s motor racing thriller F1, with Avatar: Fire and Ash being honoured only in the costume and visual effects categories and one of the most successful films of the year, the animation Zootopia 2 – known in the UK as Zootropolis 2 – making the cut only in the animated feature race.
The awards will be handed out on 15th March, with a few possible clues coming from a number of other awards ceremonies in between, including the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Directors, Writers and Producers Guilds, which all have a substantial cross-over with the Oscar voting membership.
