Elsinore, Queen at Sea & Tender Loving Care among most nominated films at BIFA

3rd November 2026Jason Korsner

Mike Leigh’s final film, Tender Loving Care and the London Film Festival opener, Elsinore, are among the most nominated films at this year’s British Independent Film Awards.

Clockwise from top left: Elsinore, I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning, Queen At Sea, Tender Loving Care

The BIFAs are one of the earliest film awards of the season, but very specifically targeting the British independent sector, they’re not particularly indicative of where other awards bodies might go, although a handful of the nominees are likely to turn up again at the BAFTAs, and perhaps even the Oscars.

Tender Loving Care and Elsinore will be fighting for the top prize – Best British Independent Film – against Clio Barnard’s I See buildings Fall Like Lightening, Lancer Hammer’s Queen at Sea and Marc Evans’ Effi o Blaenau.

Elsinore’s Andrew Scott and Queen at Sea’s Juliette Binoche are up for the unisex Best Lead Performance Award, with Scott’s co-star Billie Piper up against two of Binoche’s co-stars, Sir Tom Courtenay and Anna Calder-Marshall in the best supporting category.

BIFA also has separate categories for the best “joint lead” performance and the best ensemble cast; the latter sees Tender Loving Care and I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning back in contention against each other.

Elsinore, Tender Loving Care and I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning are also up against each other in the directing and screenplay categories, with Andrew Haigh and Mark Jenkin also in contention for the best director award for A Long Winter and Rose of Nevada, respectively. Queen At Sea and Effi O Blaenau are the other screenplay nominees.

Here is the full list of BIFA nominations, from which the winners will be announced, at the Roundhouse in London, on 6th December.
