Robert Aramayo is the only surprise as One Battle After Another dominates 2026 BAFTAs

Paul Thomas Anderson’s revolutionary revenge thriller, One Battle After Another, has lived up to expectations and won 6 BAFTAs, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn.

The film’s lead, Leonardo DiCaprio, wasn’t particularly expected to pick up the Best Actor prize – most analysts were predicting that he’d be beaten to the honour by Marty Supreme star Timothée Chalamet, but the surprise of the night came when the trophy went to the man who, only an hour earlier, had been named BAFTA’s Rising Star – Robert Aramayo, was honoured for his portrayal of a man with Tourette’s Syndrome, in I Swear. In his emotional acceptance speech, Aramayo paid tribute to one of the other nominees, Ethan Hawke, saying he’d been inspired by a speech he gave at his school.

The rest of the awards largely went in line with expectations, with Jessie Buckley being named the Best Actress for playing Shakespeare’s wife in Hamnet, which was also named the Outstanding British Film; one producer Sir Sam Mendes gave a mention to his fellow producer Steven Spielberg, highlighting – as is often the case – how difficult it is to classify contenders for the more parochial categories.

After four years with no British winners in the main acting categories, Aramayo wasn’t alone as Wunmi Mosaku won the Best Supporting Actress prize for Sinners, whose director also scooped the Best Original Screenplay award.

Frankenstein picked up three of the technical categories; production design, costume and hair & make-up. Brad Pitt’s F1 took the award for sound, while Avatar: Fire And Ash was honoured for its visual effects, which was arguably a surprise, given that the it largely employed the same technological advances as the previous two Avatar films.

Zootropolis 2 was named the Best Animated Feature, while Boong won the new prize for the best Children’s and Family Film.
