The British Netflix drama Adolescence has stolen the glory at the Golden Globes, sweeping four awards in the TV categories.
It was named the best limited series, as well as picking up three acting awards, for creator and star Stephen Graham, supporting actress Erin Doherty and up-and-coming actor Owen Cooper, who played the teenager accused of murdering a classmate, in the show that broke ground stylistically – with its single take episodes – and followed ITV’s post office scandal drama in influencing government thinking.
Other big winners in the TV categories included the medical series The Pitt, which was named the best TV drama, as well as earning its star Noah Wyle the best drama actor prize – The Studio, which was named the best comedy series, as well as winning its creator Seth Rogen the best comedy actor award.
With all three of these winners repeating their success from last September’s Emmys, it gave a bit of a backward-looking feel to an awards ceremony that prefers to be known as an indicator of what could be to come at the Oscars.
The two biggest Oscar contenders both took home awards, but weren’t up against each other in most categories, with Hamnet classified as a drama, while One Battle After Another was contesting the comedy awards.

The most coveted award of the night – best drama film – went to Hamnet, alongside a best dramatic actress prize for Jessie Buckley, for her portrayal of Shakespeare’s wife. But Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another took home 4 trophies, including best comedy film, best supporting actress for Teyana Taylor and best director and best screenplay, for Anderson himself.
The film’s star, Leonardo diCaprio, missed out in the best comedy actor category to Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme, distributed by A24, which is part-owned by the LA media mogul Todd Boehly, whose Eldridge Industries also now owns the Golden Globes themselves. The star of another A24 film, Rose Byrne, beat off nominees including Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo, Emma Stone and Kate Hudson to be named the best actress in a comedy, for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
Other major film awards included Wagner Moura winning best actor in a drama for The Secret Agent, which itself was named the best non-English language film, further signposting the new make-up of the voting body – of about 300 foreign film writers, rather than the former membership of the disgraced Hollywood Foreign Press Association – a group of fewer than a hundred LA-based film journalists for non-US outlets. Stellan Skarsgård won the best supporting actor award for another foreign-language film, Sentimental Value.
In the newest film category, Sinners beat hits including Avatar: Fire And Ash, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, F1 and Wicked: For Good to the Golden Globe for cinematic and box office achievement.
Two former hosts of the Globes were also honoured, with Ricky Gervais winning the stand-up prize and Amy Poehler being given the new podcast award.
