Big wins for Adolescence and Amandaland at TV BAFTAs

The Netflix TV drama about a teenager accused of murdering a female class-mate, Adolescence, has won a record 4 TV BAFTAs on one night.

With four episodes, each shot in a single take, it was named the Best Limited Series, as well as winning three of the acting awards. Owen Cooper was named the best supporting actor, while Stephen Graham won his first BAFTA for playing the boy’s father and Christine Tremarco was also honoured for playing his mother.

ITV’s Code of Silence was named the best Drama Series, while the other main acting prize went to Narges Rashidi, who was named the best leading actress for the BBC’s Prisoner 951.

Another BBC show, Motherland spin-off Amandaland, was named the best scripted comedy, but it missed out in the acting awards, with three of its stars being nominated in the same category, they were all pipped to the post by Katherine Parkinson, who plays the mother in Here We Go.

Steve Coogan won the BAFTA for the best actor in a comedy, for How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge).

Sharing the awards across the entertainment landscape, Amazon Prime’s Last One Laughing picked up two awards, for the best entertainment show and the best entertainment performance, for Bob Mortimer.

The Celebrity Traitors also won two BAFTAs, for best Reality show and the most memorable TV moment, when the comedian Alan Carr was named the winner.

Apple TV’s The Studio was named the best international show, while EastEnders won the soap prize and Crongton was named the best scripted children’s show.

Among the non-fiction categories, Channel 4 won a BAFTA for its news coverage of last year’s Twelve Day War between Israel and Iran, as well as winning the current affairs BAFTA for Gaza: Doctors Under Attack, which was cancelled by the BBC because of the potential of creating what was described as a “potential for partiality.” During the acceptance speech, the documentary makers accused the BBC of silencing the stories of Palestinian medics.
