Police and hospital dramas from the BBC are leading the field in the nominations for the BAFTA TV awards.
Ben Whishaw’s portrayal of the junior doctor Adam Kay in This is Going To Hurt earned him one of the show’s 6 nominations; Martin Freeman’s turn as a Merseyside police officer in The Responder similarly secured him one of that show’s 6 nods – including best drama series.
The Apple TV+ shows Bad Sisters and Slow Horses each have 5 nominations, across the main – and craft – categories. The Crown and The English are also up for 5 awards.
One of the acclaimed shows of recent months, Happy Valley, was broadcast too late to be eligible for this year’s event, but its star Sarah Lancashire has been nominated for playing the US TV cook Julia Child in the eponymous Julia.
She’s up against acting heavyweights including Imelda Staunton, for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, Maxime Peake as a Hillsborough campaigner in Anne and Vicky McClure, as a mother investigating the death of her daughter in Without Sin.
Freeman and Whishaw face competition for best actor from Gary Oldman, for Slow Horses, Cillian Murphy – the only recognition for the final series of Peaky Blinders.
The ITV drama Sherwood received supporting actor and actress nominations for Adeel Akhtar and Lesley Manville.
The Outlaws’ Stephen Merchant and Weird Al Jankovic star Daniel Radcliffe are among the best comedy actor nominees, with the best comedy actress nominees including Derry Girls‘ Siobhán Mcsweeney, Diane Morgan, for her mockumentary, Cunk on Earth, and Daisy May Cooper for Am I Being Unreasonable, which has a total of 4 nominations.
An episode of Casualty, in which the actors improvised their dialogue, is in the running in the continuing drama category, up against EastEnders and Emmerdale, but last year’s winner, Coronation Street, failed to secure a nomination.
Claudia Winkleman – and her show The Traitors – have also been recognised in the entertainment and reality categories.
The live event nominations sees the BBC’s coverage of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations up against the corporation’s coverage of her funeral, just weeks later.
The winners in the main categories will be announced on 14th May from the following full list of nominees, with the craft awards being announced three weeks earlier:
