Romania’s Cristian Mungiu wins second Palme d’Or

Nineteen years after first winning the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, the Romanian director Cristian Mungiu has received the prestigious Palme d’Or again for his family drama Fjord, his first English-language film, starring Sebastian Stan and recent Oscar-nominee, Renate Reinsve.

He beat the critics’ favourite Pawel Pawlikowski, who shared the best director prize, for Fatherland, with the Spanish pair, Javier Calva and Javier Ambrossi, who made The Black Ball.

The acting awards were also shared, by stars of the same film; Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto shared Best Actress for Japan’s All of a Sudden, with Valentin Campagne and Emmanuel Macchia being named Best Actors for Lukas Dhont’s First World War drama, Coward.

The Best Screenplay prize also went to a Belgian film, A Man of His Time, written by Emmanuel Marre.

The runner-up Grand Prix went to Russia’s Andrey Zvyagintsev for Minotaur, and the third-placed Jury Prize was awarded to Valeska Grisebach’s The Dreamed Adventure.
