Seeing this year’s BAFTA Film nominations almost feels like a bit of deja vu after last week’s equivalent Oscar announcement, with One Battle After Another, Sinners, Hamnet and Marty Supreme leading the nominations – just in a slightly different order. The British Academy has given 14 nods to Paul Thomas Anderson’s revolutionary revenge thriller, one ahead of Ryan Coogler’s vampire horror, with the Shakespeare drama and table-tennis thriller each having 11. Frankenstein and Sentimental Value have 8 nominations each.
In the main acting categories, Golden Globe winners Jessie Buckley and Rose Byrne will continue their rivalry, with Kate Hudson, Renate Reinsve and Emma Stone also adding to their Best Actress Oscar nominations. With six stars on the shortlist, One Battle After Another’s Chase Infiniti is also in the running for the BAFTA.
Four of the Best Actor nominees have also been recognised by BAFTA, with the favourites being Leonardo DiCaprio, and Timothée Chalamet, who beat him to the Golden Globe. Michael B Jordan and Ethan Hawke are also nominated, alongside two actors who missed out at the Academy Awards, Bugonia’s Jesse Plemons and – hinting at BAFTA’s British provenance, Robert Aramayo for the Tourettes drama, I Swear.

In the supporting categories, Jessie Buckley’s fellow Irish Hamnet co-star Paul Mescal was included, alongside Stellan Skarsgård, Frankenstein’s Jacob Elordi, two of DiCaprio’s co-stars, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro and Peter Mullan, clocking up his first acting BAFTA nomination at the age of 66, for I Swear.
The biggest diversion from the Oscars shortlist among the acting categories is best supporting actress, where only three women were nominated for both; Teyana Taylor, Wunmi Mosaku and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. BAFTA’s additions to the top table includes Marty Supreme’s Odessa A’zion alongside Brits Carey Mulligan for The Ballad of Wallis Island and Hamnet’s Emily Watson.
With 6 directors nominated, BAFTA adds Bugonia’s Yorgos Lanthimos to the Oscars’ shortlist of Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Josh Safdie, Chloé Zhao and Joachim Trier.
While all of these categories are voted on by BAFTA Academy members, the Rising Star Award is chosen by members of the public, from the shortlist of Robert Aramayo, Chase Infiniti, Archie Madekwe, Miles Caton and Posy Sterling.

In keeping with recognising talent from home, BAFTA has two categories specifically honouring British talent. The Outstanding British Film contest includes a number of features that failed to register in the main categories, including H Is For Hawk, Die My Love and box office hits such as 28 Years Later and Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. And the award for the outstanding debut by British producer, writer or director will go to one of The Ceremony, My Father’s Shadow, Pillion, A Want In Her or Wasteman.
Here is the full list of nominations for the BAFTA Film Awards, which will be handed out in a star-studded ceremony at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 22nd February:
