Conclave and The Brutalist shine at the BAFTAs

The papal thriller Conclave and the post-war architectural drama The Brutalist have each picked up four awards at the BAFTA Film Awards, with Wicked, Emilia Pérez, Anora, Dune: Part Two, A Real Pain and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl all taking home two.

Conclave was named the Best Film, but Ralph Fiennes missed out in the Best Actor race.

It was Conclave that took the top award of the night, Best Film, and the prize for the Outstanding British Film. The film also took the adapted screenplay award for Peter Straughan, while its editing was also honoured.

But its star, Ralph Fiennes missed out in the Best Leading Actor category to Adrien Brody, confirming his position as the Oscar-favourite for playing the Hungarian Holocaust survivor, trying to rebuild his reputation as an architect in post-war Philadelphia in The Brutalist, whose director Brady Corbet also picked up a BAFTA. The film also won for its cinematography and score.

The biggest surprise of the night saw Demi Moore beaten to the Best Leading Actress trophy by Mikey Madison, for her turn as an escort in the Cinderella-tale, Anora. The film was also honoured in the relatively new casting category.

It was a brand new category that ensured that the latest Wallace and Gromit adventure, Vengeance Most Fowl, took home two prizes, adding Best Children and Family Film to its Animated Feature crown.

Kieran Culkin was named Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, whose director Jesse Eisenberg also picked up the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay.

Zoë Saldaña was honoured for her role in Emila Pérez, the Spanish language musical, which also took the Foreign Language award.

The Irish film Kneecap was named the best British debut, while Wicked and Dune: Part Two each won 2 awards in the technical categories.

There was also a special BAFTA for the Medicinema charity, which builds cinemas in hospitals, to give a degree of relief to patients. Warwick Davis, whose career began as an Ewok in Return of the Jedi and has included the role of Professor Flitwick in the Harry Potter franchise, was granted a prestigious BAFTA Fellowship.
