Awards favourite The Favourite leads 2019 Film BAFTA nominations

The Favourite – a biting satire about two women vying to become the favourite of Queen Anne in the early 18th Century – has twelve nominations for the British Academy Film Awards, a full five ahead of the chasing pack, which includes the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, the Neil Armstrong biopic First Man, the latest A Star is Born remake and an intimate Mexican drama, Roma.

Olivia Colman has one of The Favourite’s 12 BAFTA nominations.

As well as being in the running for Best Film and Outstanding British Film, The Favourite – a UK/US/Irish co-production – is also up for Best Director, for Yorgos Lanthimos, and Best Original Screenplay for Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara. Olivia Colman – who picked up a Golden Globe at the weekend – is in the running for Best Actress with her two co-stars, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone, up against each other in the contest for Best Supporting Actress.

Colman will face competition from fellow Golden Globe winner Glenn Close, as well as A Star is Born’s Lady Gaga.

Other Golden Globe winners in contention include Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek and Vice’s Christian Bale in the Best Actor category. Bale’s is one of six nominations for the biopic of the former US Vice President Dick Cheney, including supporting actor Sam Rockwell and supporting actress Amy Adams.

There are five nominations for BLACKkKLANSMAN, including Spike Lee for writing and directing and Adam Driver in the best supporting actor category, but not one for the star, John David Washington.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper are both nominated for leading actor awards

Alongside BLACKkKLANSMAN, with five nominations, is A Star is Born’s Bradley Cooper himself – for Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Original Music. But the most nominations for an individual in the history of BAFTA is the Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón, who has a mention in every one of Roma’s six categories.

While the British Academy tends to prioritise British talent, Emily Blunt has failed to pick up a nomination for her portrayal of Mary Poppins, despite being in the running for a Golden Globe. But one British star who – despite decades of critically acclaimed roles – has never been nominated for a BAFTA before is Richard E Grant, who said he was “absolutely chuffed to bits” to hear that he was up for the Best Supporting Actor prize for Can You Ever Forgive Me? Steve Coogan – first nominated for an acting BAFTA with Philomena – is in the running for Best Actor for playing the smaller half of Laurel & Hardy in Stan & Ollie. And there’s a best supporting actress nomination for Claire Foy, for her portrayal of the astronaut Neil Armstrong’s wife in First Man.

Alongside The Favourite, BLACKkKLANSMAN, Green Book and If Beale Street Could Talk are among the films boosting the diversity of the nominees – but one of the most hotly tipped films, Black Panther, came away with only one nomination, in the Special Effects category.

The chair of BAFTA, Dame Pippa Harris, welcomed what she saw as the “huge diversity” on the list and the “range of voices and stories being told.” But she acknowledged that there was still a huge amount to be done to improve representation, with only 10% of the films submitted for the Best Director category – and none of those shortlisted – being directed by women. On screen, it was a better year for women; the actress Hayley Squires, who announced some of the nominations this morning, said it was fantastic that the most nominated film was led by three women, often being ugly and vicious.

Because of the inevitable British leaning of the British Academy voters – not least the inclusion of specific categories available only to films with British involvement – the BAFTAs aren’t necessarily a clear indication of who might end up walking away with Oscars at the end of Awards Season, but any nominees who end up in the running for America’s Academy Awards will certainly receive a boost from any recognition they receive in London, ten days before Oscar voting closes.
