Dune, Power of the Dog and Belfast dominate BAFTA Film Award nominations

The sci-fi epic Dune is leading the pack ahead of next month’s BAFTA Film Awards, having secured eleven nominations. But other than Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay, for its director Denis Villeneuve, the rest of the nominations are in the technical categories, such as cinematography, costume design and visual effects, with Villeneuve himself missing out on a directing nod.

Jane Campion’s western The Power of the Dog has eight nominations, including Best Film. Campion herself is one of three women in the running for the Best Director prize. Her film has also secured nominations for Best Leading Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch, with Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee up against each other in the Best Supporting Actor category.

Sir Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical Belfast is up for six awards, including Best Film and Outstanding British Film. Caitríona Balfe and Ciarán Hinds are nominated in the supporting categories, while Sir Kenneth himself was recognised for his Original Screenplay, although he missed out on a directing nomination.

The other two films up for the top award of Best Film are Adam McKay’s satirical Don’t Look Up – which also sees Leonardo DiCaprio secure a Best Leading Actor nomination – and Licorice Pizza, which has a Best Leading Actress nod for the singer Alana Haim.

Only two of the Best Film nominees have their directors in the running for the Best Director prize, with Villeneuve, Branagh and McKay losing out to Titane’s Julia Ducournau, Happening’s Audrey Diwan, Drive My Car’s Ryûsuke Hamaguchi and Aleem Khan, who directed the BFI-backed drama After Love.

Cumberbatch and DiCaprio have competition from Will Smith, for King Richard and Swan Song’s Mahershala Ali. Two smaller films, Boiling Point and Ali & Ava, which are both up for Outstanding British Film, also see their lead actors, Stephen Graham and Adeel Akhtar, challenging the global stars. But there was nothing for Denzel Washington for his lead performance in The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Lady Gaga is among the best dramatic actress nominees for The House of Gucci

The leading actress category contains two of the big omissions, with recognition for neither The Lost Daughter‘s Olivia Colman or Kristen Stewart, for her acclaimed portrayal of Princess Diana in Spencer.  Those in the running include Lady Gaga for House of Gucci, deaf actress Emilia Jones for Coda, Passing’s Tessa Thompson, Renate Reinsve for The Worst Person In The World and the acclaimed TV actress Joanna Scanlan for another low-budget British hit After Love.

With both After Love and Ali & Ava being backed by the BFI, the head of its Film Fund, Mia Bays, said their multiple nominations marked “a monumental achievement” during an “incredibly tough period” for the industry.

BBC Film also backed After Love and Ali & Ava, in addition to The Power of the Dog and Andrea Arnold’s nominated documentary Cow. The Director of BBC Film, Rose Garnett, said, “We’re so thrilled that the incredible work of talent on BBC Film-backed titles, including The Power of The Dog, After Love, Ali & Ava and Cow, has been recognised by Bafta voters. The breadth of nominations reflect our support for British filmmaking talent at every level, and our international partnerships to help bring outstanding storytelling to audiences in the UK and across the globe.”
