WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Three years after Ashley (Harriet Dyer) humiliated Gordon (Patrick Brammall) by declining his public marriage proposal at a wedding, they bump into each other, by chance, when she turns up as a doctor at his local surgery.

The initial meeting is, unsurprisingly, awkward, but there’s a tentative effort to keep in touch, so that Ashley can spend some time with their dog, Colin (from Accounts) again.

They’re both in relationships now, which could – in theory – make their underlying friendship easier to rekindle, without their feelings for each other getting in the way. In practice, of course, it puts both of their relationships under strain.

With Gordon’s colleagues Brett (Michael Logo) and Chiara (Genevieve Hegney) always on hand to offer their unique brand of advice – and Ashley’s friend and housemate Megan (Emma Harvie) too busy trying to become an influencer to be of much use to anyone, the former couple find themselves back in “will-they-won’t-they” territory.

WHAT’S IT LIKE?

After two seasons of one of the sharpest rom-coms of the moment, creator/writer/stars Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer have a lot to live up to – and largely, they succeed.

The four episodes roughly break down into two of the finest half hours of comedy in recent years, with laugh-out-loud moments that will surprise and delight – followed by two episodes the are more about the darker drama of relationship breakdowns – before we get two episodes which largely revolve around arch, set-pieces.

Finally – after a bit of a mid-season wobble, as they seem to be experimenting for a few episodes – they throw all the ingredients back together again for the last two, mixing it up to bring this three-season arc to a satisfying end.

There’s something slightly odd about a three-season show in which the will-they-won’t-they arc of the first series is essentially repeated in the third, but although it takes some unexpected – and unnecessary – twists and turns on the way, it always ends up back on the right track.

We’re now familiar enough with the characters that we can anticipate their feelings – and the returning supporting cast can be pushed a little beyond where other shows might take them – some of the newer characters are pushed a little too far.

There’s humour, pathos, observation and enlightenment, as we laugh with most characters – and at others. It can be cruel at times – but it’s always fair.

As Colin found – with his wheels standing in for his rear legs – life doesn’t always take you where you’d expect to go, but all you can do is make the best of what life throws at you. Life has thrown us Colin from Accounts, so enjoy it while you can.
