The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has spread its honours thinly, making it hard to make predictions ahead of next month’s Oscars, but the early favourites failed to shine.
Netflix had 34 nominations across the film and TV categories going in to the night but left with only 2 trophies, one for Olivia Colman for playing the Queen in The Crown and the other for Laura Dern’s supporting role in Marriage Story. Martin Scorsese’s much heralded The Irishman left the Beverly Hilton hotel empty-handed.
The film to receive the biggest boost was the First World War epic 1917, which was named the Best Film in the drama category and also won best director, rounding off a week to remember for the newly knighted Sir Sam Mendes.
Best Actor in drama was Joaquin Phoenix for Joker, which also is won best original score.
Best Actor in a comedy or musical went to Welshman Taron Egerton for playing Sir Elton John In Rocketman. Sir Elton and his long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin, portrayed by Jamie Bell in the film, took home the prize for the best original song.
But Rocketman missed out in the Best Film in the musical or comedy category to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which also saw the director Quentin Tarantino honoured for his screenplay and co-star Brad Pitt picking you the Best Supporting Actor prize.
Renée Zellweger was named best actress in a drama for her portrayal of Judy Garland in the eponymous Judy. Awkwafina become the first Asian American woman to win a major acting prize, taking the best actress honours in the comedy and musical category for The Farewell.
There was plenty of British success in the TV categories. As well as Olivia Colman’s trophy for the best dramatic actress in The Crown, Brian Cox was named the best actor in a drama series for HBO’s Succession, which itself won the best drama series prize for its British creator Jesse Armstrong, one of the men behind The Thick Of It.
The BBC’s Fleabag won the best comedy series prize and it’s creator, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, repeated her Emmy success as the best comedy actress.
If some of the winners were a surprise, the host, Ricky Gervais, was predictable in his irreverence, having a laugh at the expense of many of the world’s biggest stars, urging them not to get political in their acceptance speeches – advice that many, of course, ignored, with the climate and women’s rights being among the top issues to be backed.
