After a year when most people across the world – and certainly in the US – have been stuck at home, watching the small screen, America’s Television Academy has announced the nominations for its prestigious Emmy Awards.
It’s the streamers who are leading the field, with the long-running Netflix drama, The Crown, neck-and-neck on 24 nominations with the Disney+ Star Wars spin-off, The Mandalorian. Another Disney+ show, WandaVision, from the Marvel stable, has 23 nominations.
Many of the cast members of The Crown are in the running for Emmys, including Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin, who play the Queen, Prince Charles and Princess Diana in the drama, based on the British Royal Family. There are also nominations for Gillian Anderson, Helena Bonham Carter, Emerald Fennell and Tobias Menzies, who portray Margaret Thatcher, Princess Margaret, Camilla Parker Bowles and the Duke of Edinburgh.
British men are particularly strong in the Limited Series category, where Hugh Grant, Paul Bettany and Ewan McGregor are among the five leading actor nominees, for The Undoing, WandaVision and Halston.
The Crown is one of eight shows up for best drama series, alongside The Mandalorian, The Handmaid’s Tale This is Us, Pose, Bridgerton, Lovecraft Country and The Boys.
Although the Emmy’s are designed to recognised American shows, a number of British productions have made it onto the short-list, as a result of US co-productions, so Michaela Coel’s BAFTA-winning I May Destroy You is in the running for Best Limited Series, while Coel herself is nominated for acting, writing and directing.
In the acting category, she’s one of four British nominees, alongside Mare Of Easttown’s Kate Winslet, Anya Taylor-Joy for The Queen’s Gambit and Cynthia Erivo, for Genius: Aretha.
Although it’s the equal most nominated show, The Mandalorian is recognised mostly in the technical categories.
There’s less British interest in the comedy categories, where the main contenders include Black-ish, Apple TV’s Ted Lasso, Hacks, Saturday Night Live and The Kominsky Method.
The winners – announced in September – will be voted for by a membership of more than twenty five thousand people working in the TV industry, from the following list (main categories only):
