A good night for British talent at the biggest night for American TV

Many of the top prizes on the biggest night for American TV have gone to British stars, with the two most prestigious acting awards crossing the channel.

Claire Foy was named the Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series for The Crown

Claire Foy has bettered last year’s nomination, by being named the Best Lead Actress in a drama series for reprising her role as the Queen in Netflix’s The Crown.

The Best Lead Actor in a drama series also went to a British actor, Welshman Matthew Rhys, for playing an undercover Russian spy in 1980s Washington, in The Americans – one of the few high-profile US shows still available on free-to-air TV in the UK.

Thandie Newton was named the best supporting actress in a drama series, for Westworld.

Stephen Daldry was honoured for directing The Crown, and the British writing pair of Charlie Brooker and William Bridges won the Emmy for the best writing for a “limited series, movie or dramatic special” for USS Callister, an episode of the Black Mirror series.

The British satirist John Oliver, who’s built his career in the US, won the best variety talk series for Last Week Tonight, beating fellow Brit James Corden to the trophy.
