Bradley Cooper’s remake of the musical romantic tragedy A Star is Born is emerging as an awards season favourite, scooping nominations in four of the five film categories at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The Guild – the main union for US-based actors – is generally a good indicator of where the Oscar attention might end up, later in the Awards Season, because such a large proportion of the Oscar-voting Academy are actors.
Cooper – who starred in as well as directed the film – is nominated in the Outstanding Male Lead category, alongside Briton Christian Bale for portraying the George W Bush’s Vice President Dick Cheney, in Vice, John David Washington, for Spike Lee’s BLACKkKLANSMAN, Viggo Mortensen for Green Book and Rami Malek, whose portrayal of the Queen singer Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody has been widely praised.
Cooper’s co-star, the singer Lady Gaga, is up for Outstanding Female Lead, with competition coming from Glenn Close for The Wife and Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me? Two British actresses are also in the running; Emily Blunt for the title role in Mary Poppins Returns and Olivia Colman in The Favourite.
A Star Is Born is also represented in the Supporting Actor category, with Sam Elliot facing a challenge from Green Book’s Mahershala Ali, BLACKkKLANSMAN’s Adam Driver, Beautiful Boy’s Timothée Chalamet and Richard E Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Supporting actress is the only category without representation from A Star Is Born. Emily Blunt has a second nomination here, for A Quiet Place, with competition from fellow Brit Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone – both for The Favourite. Bale’s Vice co-star Amy Adams is also in the running, alongside Margot Robbie, for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in Mary Queen of Scots.
SAG’s equivalent of a Best Picture category is its award for an Outstanding Performance by a Cast and A Star is Born is joined in this contest by BLACKkKLANSMAN and Bohemian Rhapsody, which each have individual nominations, and Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians, which don’t.
Interestingly, these films were picked ahead of The Favourite, which has three individual nominations and Vice, Green Book and Can You Ever Forgive Me?, which each have two, perhaps indicating that after recent controversies in Hollywood, the actors guild wanted to get more diversity into their highest profile category.
Like the Golden Globes, SAG also uses its annual ceremony to honour achievements in TV as well as film and there’s a similarly healthy showing from British talent on the small-screen too.
Hugh Grant and Sir Anthony Hopkins are up against each other in the contest for the best actor in a TV movie or mini-series. Joseph Fiennes is in the running for best actor in a drama series, for the second season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
Among the shows with the most nominations in the TV categories are the dramas Ozark and The Handmaid’s Tale and the comedies Barry and The Kominsky Method.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in West Hollywood on 27th January, from the following full list of nominations:
