Globes set up La La Land and Moonlight as Oscar front-runners

The 2017 Awards Season has kicked off in earnest with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announcing a plethora of nominations covering film and TV, comedy, musicals and drama.

La La Land’s Damien Chazelle is up against Mel Gibson and Tom Ford for Best Director

The front-runner among the film categories is Damien Chazelle’s follow-up to Whiplash, La La Land, which is up for 7 awards, including for its stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, and two for Chazelle himself, as writer and director.

Hot on its tails, with 6 nominations, is London Film Festival hit Moonlight, a coming of age drama set in Miami’s black community. With more nominations for Denzel Washington’s Fences and Loving, about the forbidden marriage between a white man and a black woman, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is likely to have little trouble avoiding another race row, when its Oscar nominations are announced at the end of January.

Completing his Hollywood rehabilitation, Mel Gibson will be back at the top table with his film Hacksaw Ridge up for 3 awards; Best Drama, Best Director and Best Actor in a Drama for Britain’s Andrew Garfield.

Other British nominees include Hugh Grant (for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical for Florence Foster Jenkins), Lily Collins (for Best Actress in a Comedy for Rules Don’t Apply), Naomie Harris (for Best Supporting Actress in Moonlight) and Dev Patel (Lion) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals) up against each other in the Best Supporting Actor category.

The Golden Globes are handed out at the Beverly Hilton hotel

British stars have also fared well in the television categories, with Tom Hiddlestone, Olivia Colman and Hugh Laurie all up for awards for the BBC’s The Night Manager. Another British production, Netflix’s The Crown, is up for 3 awards, including for Claire Foy as the Queen and the American actor John Lithgow in a supporting role as Sir Winston Churchill. They’ll face tough opposition from American shows including Westworld, Game of Thrones and The People vs OJ Simpson.

The winners, announced at a glittering celebrity ceremony in Beverly Hills on 8th January, will come from the following full list of nominees:
