After twice delaying the announcement because of the wildfires ravaging the Los Angeles area, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has finally revealed this year’s Oscar nominations.

The Spanish-language musical about a transgender drug boss, Emilia Pérez, is leading the pack – with thirteen nominations – the most ever for a foreign language film.
The Brutalist – about a Holocaust survivor who becomes an architect in Philadelphia – and the musical Wicked – a backstory to the Wizard of Oz – each have ten nominations.
The papal thriller Conclave is up for eight Oscars – including the British talent of Ralph Fiennes for best actor – and Peter Straughan for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Among the main talking points, the Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón is the first trans person to secure an acting nomination. In the Best Actress category, she’s up against Demi Moore, who – at the age of 62 – has secured her first nomination, for her role in The Substance. Other nominees in their category include Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo, Mikey Madison for Anora and Fernanda Torres for the Brazilian film, I’m Still Here, which alongside Emilia Pérez means that two foreign language films are in the running for Best Picture.

The ten-strong field also includes two films starring Timothée Chalamet – Part Two of Denis Villeneuve’s updating of Dune and A Complete Unknown, for which he’s nominated in the Best Actor category for his portrayal of Bob Dylan.
Chalamet and Fiennes are up against The Brutalist’s Adrien Brody, Colman Domingo for Sing Sing and Sebastian Stan for playing Donald Trump in The Apprentice.
Nominees in the supporting acting categories include Guy Pearce, Edward Norton, Kieran Culkin, Monica Barbaro, Ariana Grande and Felicity Jones.
In the directing category, The Substance’s Coralie Fargeat has become only the ninth woman to be nominated in nearly a century of the Oscars; she’s up against A Complete Unknown’s James Mangold, Brady Corbet, who created The Brutalist, Anora’s Sean Baker and the French auteur Jacques Audiard, who made Emilia Pérez.
And in one of the less discussed categories, Visual Effects, there’s a nod for the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man, in which the singer is portrayed throughout as a chimpanzee.
The winners will be announced at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on 2nd March, from the following full list of nominees:
