Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist and Conclave lead Golden Globe nominations

The new profit-making company behind the Golden Globes – once the second most prestigious awards in Hollywood – have announced the nominations for next month’s awards ceremony – even as controversy continues over the way the Chelsea owner Todd Boehly took control of the awards from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which he was hired to rescue after allegations of racism and corruption – only to end up winding up the organisation after selling the awards to his own companies.

The new owners – Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions – have kept the format intact, honouring both films and TV – and separating the main awards for each media into dramas, on the one hand, and musicals or comedies, on the other. They have also retained their position as the first high-profile awards ceremony of the season – ensuring that anyone interested in what might happen at the Oscars pays attention.

Adrien Brody in The Brutalist

The films leading the race for awards this year include the dramas Conclave, about cardinals conspiring to elect a new Pope – and The Brutalist, about a Hungarian Holocaust survivor who heads to New York to work as an architect – and the musicals Wicked, based on the stage show of the same name – and Emilia Pérez, about a Mexican drug lord who begins a new life as a woman.

Emilia Pérez tops the nominations with 10, followed by 7 for The Brutalist and 6 for Conclave. There are 5 nominations each for Anora and The Substance and 4 for Wicked.

Stars in the running for drama awards include Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody, Daniel Craig and Timothée Chalamet, while the comedy and musical shortlist includes Cynthia Erivo, Amy Adams, Demi Moore, Zendaya, Jesse Eisenberg, Hugh Grant, Jesse Plemons and Sebastian Stan.

Those up for supporting awards include Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Felicity Jones, Edwards Norton, Guy Pearce and Denzel Washington, who picked up a nomination for Gladiator II.

Mikey Madison (r) is one of the favourites for Best Actress in a drama for Anora

The favourites in some categories, though, include lesser known actors – such as newcomer Mikey Madison, who is in the running for Best Actress in a drama for the Cannes Palme d’Or winner, Anora.

Among the TV shows with the most nominations are the dramas The Diplomat, Slow Horses and The Day of the Jackal, the comedies The Gentlemen, Hacks and Only Murders in the Building and the Limited Series, Baby Reindeer, The Penguin and Ripley.

British stars Gary Oldman, Keira Knightley, Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning are among those up for TV awards – and the singer Robbie Williams has been nominated for a song he wrote and performed for his upcoming biopic, Better Man.

As the rehabilitation of the awards continues in Hollywood, the owners of the Golden Globes brand will be hoping to shake off doubts those in the industry still have about the make-up of the new body and what has happened to those who used to vote. But the allegations against the former owners are now far enough back that Hollywood is probably ready to forget about the claims and get back to celebrating its achievements. After years of MeToo controversy, strikes by writers and actors and corruption and racism scandals, insiders just want to move on – and they’ll be hoping to take the public with them.

The awards will be handed out on 5th January, at a ceremony produced by Boehly’s Dick Clark Productions, at the Beverly Hilton hotel – also part-owned by one of Boehly’s companies, from the following full list of nominations:
