The stage musical based on Michael Bond’s Paddington books and Paul Kay’s film adaptations has taken home seven prizes at the 50th annual Olivier Awards, recognising the best of London theatre.
It was named the best new musical and won awards for directing, costumes and set design.
Paddington The Musical was also honoured with three acting awards – two for supporting actor and actress in a musical, for Tom Edden and Victoria Hamilton-Barritt – and the Olivier Award for best actor in a musical went to the pair who bring Paddington himself to life – James Hameed, who provides the voice, and 4ft tall actress Arti Shah, who inhabits the costume.
The prize for the best actress in a musical went to the Hollywood star Rachel Zegler, for her performance in Evita, in which she famously sung Don’t Cry For Me Argentina from the balcony overlooking Argyll Street, while the paying audience watched her performance on a screen. Evita also won the award for best theatre choreographer.
Rosamund Pike was named the best actress in a play for the legal drama Inter Alia, while Jack Holden was named best actor for Kenrex, which also won the sound design award.
Julie Hesmondhalgh was named the best supporting actress for Punch, which also won best new play, with Paapa Essiedu winning best supporting actor for All My Sons, which was also named the best revival.
Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods was named the best musical revival, as well as winning the lighting prize.
A special award went to Dame Elaine Paige, in honour of her six decade career in theatre. She said she was “deeply grateful for every collaboration, every performance, every note that has led me here… thank you for letting me spend a lifetime doing what I love.”
