The Welsh actor Matthew Rhys has helped his new show, Widow’s Bay, dominate the Emmy Awards – and entered the record books twice in the process.

He’s become the first star to win two best leading actor awards on the same night – taking the comedy award for Widow’s Bay and the limited series category, for The Beast In Me. In so doing, he’s also become the first star to win the to prize in all three categories, having previously been named the best leading actor in a drama, for The Americans.

His Widow’s Bay co-stars, fellow Brit Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root won the comedy supporting categories, while the final comedy award – for best leading actress – went to Jean Smart for Hacks – the fifth time the TV Academy has honoured her for the role.

The best drama series was The Pitt, whose star Noah Wyle was named the best leading actor. Rhea Seehorn won the award for the best lead actress in a drama, for Pluribus.  The supporting awards for drama went to The Diplomat’s Allison Janney and Tom Pelphrey, for Task.

The other acting award presented on the night saw Sally Field honoured in the limited series category for Remarkably Bright Creatures, before she went on to present a tribute to the late singer and actress, Dolly Parton.
