The German-language First World War film, All Quiet on the Western Front, has taken the top prizes at the British Academy film awards, securing Best Picture and Best Director for Edward Berger.
The Netflix production took home a total of seven awards from the ceremony at the Southbank Centre in London, including for its cinematography and its screenplay, co-written by the Scottish triathlete, Lesley Paterson, adapted from the 1929 novel of the same name.
The darkly comic Anglo-Irish nihilistic bromance, The Banshees of Inisherin, secured four awards, although not perhaps the ones that would have been most expected. It missed out on Best Picture and Best Director to All Quiet on the Western Front, Colin Farrell missed out on the Best Lead Actor prize to Elvis‘s Austin Butler, and Brendan Gleeson lost to his own co-star, Barry Keoghan in the contest for Best Supporting Actor. The film’s main female star, Kerry Condon, was named the Best Supporting Actress. The film, which looks and sounds about as Irish as it gets, was also named the Outstanding British Film of last year, by virtue of funding from Channel 4 and its director, Martin McDonagh, being a Londoner. He also picked up the award for the Best Original Screenplay.
The other main category reserved for British production saw Charlotte Wells win the prize for an outstanding British debut for Aftersun.
Other major winners included the Oscar-favourite Cate Blanchett for her leading performance in Tár, beating off competition from two black actresses who failed to secure Academy Award nominations in the same category. Guillermo del Toro won the Animated Feature category for his version of Pinocchio. Elvis took the Costume and Hair Design awards. The Production Design BAFTA went to Babylon. Avatar: The Way of Water won the award for special effects and in the only award voted for by the public, the EE BAFTA Rising Star award went to the Sex Education star, Emma Mackey, soon to be seen in Barbie.
One of the most nominated films of the night, Everything Everywhere All At Once came away with only the editing award.
