Everything Everywhere All At Once leads the Oscar race

The multiverse comedy Everything Everywhere All At Once is an unlikely leader of the pack in the Oscar race, with 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and four acting nominations.

Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan are among the 11 nominations for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

With a relatively low budget, a largely Asian cast and released as long ago as last March, it’s giving some of Hollywood’s biggest names a run for their money.

The two biggest films of last year in terms of box office receipts, Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick, both join Everything Everywhere All At Once in the Best Picture race – making it the first time that more than one of the films shortlisted for the top honour have been sequels.

Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson have both secured themselves nominations for The Banshees of Inisherin.

Other Best Picture nominees include the German war film All Quiet on the Western Front and the Anglo-Irish dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, which each have 9 nominations. Martin McDonagh is nominated for writing, directing and producing Banshees, while Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon are all up for acting awards.

Farrell will be up against fellow Irishman Paul Mescal for Aftersun, while Living star, Britain’s Bill Nighy, is also in the running, alongside The Whale’s Brendan Fraser and Austin Butler for his portrayal of Elvis.

There’s another British actor, unexpectedly up for Best Leading Actress; Andrea Riseborough has been recognised for her role as an addict who squanders a lottery win in To Leslie, a film which took less than £22,000 at the global box office, after her performance was championed by a range of high-profile stars – and Oscar voters – including Jennifer Aniston, Charlize Theron and Gwyneth Paltrow. But she has an uphill battle, with competition from Golden Globe winner Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Blonde, Everything Everywhere’s Michelle Yeoh and Michelle Williams, for playing a version of Steven Spielberg’s own mother in his semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans.

Top Gun: Maverick is one of two sequels in the Best Picture list.

The ten films up for Best Picture include, for the first time, two sequels – the two highest grossing films of last year, Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever missed out on a Best Picture nod, but one of its stars, Angela Bassett, secured Marvel Studios’ first acting nomination, in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Despite the last two Best Director Oscars going to women, there’s an all-male director shortlist this year, with Banshees’ Martin McDonagh up against Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert – otherwise known as “the Daniels” – for Everything Everwhere All At One, Tár’s Todd Field, the Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund for Triangle of Sadness and Steven Spielberg for telling us about his childhood in The Fabelmans.

After last year’s stand-off between the streamers, with Apple’s CODA and Netflix’s The Power of the Dog battling for the top prizes, the dynamic has changed this year, as film-goers have been able to return to cinemas. With Everything Everywhere All At Once topping the list, followed closely by The Banshees of Inisherin, most people who are interested will already have had a chance to see the main contenders; before the pandemic, the runners and riders often didn’t make it onto the big screen in the UK until after the nominations were announced – but one consequence of having the most nominated films having long since been released means there’s no opportunity for the box-office bounce that used to come from awards success.

The winners will be chosen by the 10,000 strong Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and announced on 12 March, from the following full list of nominees:
