The Harry Potter star, Daniel Radcliffe, has won a Tony Award, for the first time, in recognition of the best shows and performances on Broadway. He was named the best featured actor in a musical for his role in the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along.
Collecting his award, on stage in New York, he wished his father a happy Fathers’ Day and thanked him for playing Sondheim in the car while he was young.
Jonathan Groff was named the best actor in a musical for the same production, which also won the award for the best revival of a musical. Sondheim’s classic also won the Tony Award for the best orchestrations.
Another musical, The Outsiders, also picked up 4 prizes. It was named best musical – earning a Tony for one of its producers, Angelina Jolie. It also won trophies for the best direction, sound design and lighting for musicals.
The only production to win more awards was Stereophonic, which went into the awards with a record 13 nominations and came away with 5 wins, including best play. It also won the prizes for the best direction, best sound design and best scenic design for a play – and Will Brill was named the best featured actor in a play.
Other multiple winners included Appropriate, which was named best revival of a play, won the award for best lighting in a play and it’s lead actress, Sarah Paulson, was also recognised. And there were two awards for Hell’s Kitchen, based on the life of the singer Alicia Keys. Maleah Joi Moon was named the best actress in a leading role in a musical and Kecia Lewis was honoured as the best actress in a featured role in a musical.
