BAFTA has announced its shortlist for the Rising Star Award, that will be voted for by the public.

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor John Boyega, who launched his career in Attack the Block in 2011, is up against the Fifty Shades of Grey actress Dakota Johnson, who also appeared in the recent real-life gangster film Black Mass.

The other nominees include Taron Egerton, who was most recently seen alongside Colin Firth in Kingsman: The Secret Service, Bel Powley, who starred in the acclaimed low budget The Diary of a Teenage Girl and Brie Larson, last seen alongside Amy Schumer in Trainwreck and soon to be seen in the 2015 festival favourite, Room.

Previous winners of the award include James McAvoy, Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Juno Temple, Will Poulter and Jack O’Connell.

This year’s nominees were chosen by a panel that included the Lobster actress Olivia Colman and TV personality Jonathan Ross and the winner will be announced at the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony on Valentine’s Day.
